Here are my picks for the Top Worst Audio Trends since 2000. Feel free to add your own comments and picks.
- The End of Hi-Fidelity – Digital distribution of music has lowered the fidelity bar to new levels offering consumers less quality than ever. George Massenburg recently spoke out on the effects of compression formats that introduce distortion, destroy stereo image and generally sound awful giving us something to think about and the knowledge to fight back.
- Illegal Downloading – The popularity of illegal peer-to-peer music “sharing” eroded the power of copyright and greatly affected the bottom line of our industry. The Supreme Court came down on the side of copyright holders but not before the damage was done and an entire generation grew to feel they were entitled to free music.
- Pitch Correction Abuse – Pitch correction software is nothing short of amazing, but in many cases it created a music culture where talent is optional and production is driven by “fix it later” instead of “get it right.”

Cymatics: Visualizing Sound
It is inspiring to see what sound can do with the things around us. In this TED talk Evan Grant tells us about cymatics and how sound waves can be visualized. These visualizations can provide us with information about the sounds we analyze, and they can form beautiful designs as well.
Infinite C is a suite of four-second songs composed in C major and played back in random order.
This browser-based sequencer accepts Play and Pause commands at four second intervals, indicated by an occasional music note icon. Open multiple copies on one machine or open copies on multiple machines at once. Tested in current versions of FireFox and Safari.
Inspired by Andrew Shurtz and Sebastian Campos of We Have Photoshop. It is also an accidental homage to Terry Riley’s 1964 piece In C.

UK company Record-Play Ltd has launched what the company says is the first every fully automated, fixed-rate, online music licensing platform of its kind. With a library of over 3500 indie label tracks, the Music Hub allows users to license, download and use its inventory instantaneously.
The Music Hub aims to take both the time and cost unpredictability out of clearing tracks. With production applications in TV, film, advertising and gaming, the industry has already started to take advantage of this new resource. Hub users include Adidas, Reebok, Skoda and more, with over 50 record labels currently represented and new labels being added all the time.
“The experience we had with Record-Play was brilliant, we needed a very specific piece of music and had a very short space of time to find it,” says Jezz Vernon, Head of Marketing for Metrodome Films UK. “Music Hub generated selection after selection and within 48 hours we’d found the perfect track.”
“We believe this initiative allows businesses to re-assess the ways in which they use music in production,” says Daniel Cross, Managing Director of Record-Play Ltd. “We have negotiated a low cost structure which means companies, even those on tight budgets, don’t need to compromise on quality.”
The full catalog of music in the Hub is available for anyone to browse and stream, no registration is necessary. For users who do choose to register, tracks become immediately downloadable for testing to picture or licensing. To explore the site visit: www.record-play.net/musichub.
