flaming lips

Group to perform their cover album at the Tennessee festival

The Flaming Lips have revealed that they are to play their Pink Floyd cover album of ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ at the upcoming Bonnaroo festival.

The group, who released the LP in December, last played the album live at a New Year’s Eve show in their hometown of Oklahoma City.

“We did it at the New Year’s Eve show just knowing everybody’s gonna be taking acid, staying awake until five in the morning,” Wayne Coyne told Spinner. “I don’t think it’ll be that much of a stretch to think Friday night at 2:30 in the morning at Bonnaroo would be that much different than being in Oklahoma City on New Year’s Eve.”

The festival takes place in Manchester, Tennessee between June 10-13, with tickets for the event going on sale on February 9.

emi loss

(UPDATED) It’s official: EMI has reported a 2.4 Billion Loss.

Accountants examining EMI’s books as part of a dispute between the label group, it’s investment firm owner Terra Firma, and lender CitiGroup are expected to reveal that the company is $2.23 $2.4 billion in the red,

The red ink would put EMI in default of the terms of its massive $4.5 billion debt to Citi which is struggling under its own losses. To make matters worse, a $160 million loan payment is due on March 31st; and if that is missed, the bank may be forced to take control of the struggling company.

loomer

Loomer String is a new virtual instrument that emulates the beautiful sound of the polyphonic string synthesizer.

According to Loomer, String’s authentic tone comes from its accurate emulation of the divide-down oscillator technology behind the lush ensemble synths of the 70s.

It’s available for Mac, Windows & Linux for £50 (+ VAT if applicable). A demo version is available.

Details below.

Dual Layer

String has two individual sound generating Layers, each housing three phase-locked oscillator stops at 16′, 8′ and 4′ ranges for Layer 1, and 8′, 4′, and 2′ ranges for Layer 2. The relative volumes of each stop can be finely tuned to produce an enormous range of timbres. Both Layers have controllable note split points. Layers can be placed so that each is controlled by a specific range on the keyboard, or even overlapped and stacked together.

Five Voicing Modes

Each Layer has its own Voicing Mode from a choice of Monophonic with Last, Low, and High Note Priorities, Paraphonic, and Polyphonic. In Polyphonic mode each voice has its own Attack/Release amplitude modulation envelope. In Paraphonic mode all voices within a Layer share a single monophonic Attack/Release amplitude envelope. The Monophonic Modes produce a single voice, which can be either the Lowest, Highest, or Last note pressed.

Five Filter Types

Layers can be further shaped using the monophonic Filter section. This section has several Filter types; a Highpass / Lowpass pair of filters in series, an analogue resonant filter in either Lowpass, Bandpass, or Highpass modes with various modulation options (including Channel Aftertouch), and a 9-Band EQ. The Filter section can also be switched off altogether.

Flexible Routing

Both Layers can be individually routed into the Effects section. Layer 1 can also optionally be routed directly into Layer 2’s Filter to produce serial Filter tones.

Effects

String’s Chorus section is modeled on the bucket-brigade device that characterized the sound of the classic ensemble synths. Select from two different Chorus algorithms for either an authentic Ensemble timbre (Type 1), or a more modern, denser sound. (Type 2). A built-in stereo Phaser can be used to add movement, depth, and interest to String timbres. The Effects section is rounded off with two mono bucket-brigade device delay units with independent time and feedback settings, which can be tempo synced, and linked together into a single stereo delay.

Full MIDI Learn

All controls can be easily mapped to a hardware controller using the simplified MIDI Learn feature.

With optimised audio algorithms that won’t overload your processor, rock-solid stability, and easy integration with any MIDI hardware controller, String is ideal for live work. With a simple and intuitive interface, flexible Bank and Program management, and total parameter automation, String fits right into your studio environment. String is available for Mac OS X v 10.4 and above, Windows XP and above, and Linux, in Audio Unit, VST plugin, RTAS for Pro Tools 7 and above, and Standalone application formats.
An evaluation is available for free download, with the following limitations:

  • User created Program and Bank configurations can be saved, but not loaded.
  • Output will be periodically interrupted, approximately every 30 seconds, by a short moment of silence.
  • Audio output will stop after 30 minutes of continuous use. The only way to continue using String is to restart the application.

Purchasing a licence will remove these evaluation limitations.

A licence entitles you to lifetime free updates for String.

one of its latest guitars – the Buckethead Signature Les Paul model.

Each Buckethead Signature Les Paul is crafted from a two-piece maple top attached with ultra-strong Franklin Titebond 50 glue to a chambered mahogany body. This wood combination, one of the most legendary pairs in the history of the solid and semi-solid electric guitar, yields a “best of both worlds” tonal splendor.

Reflecting Buckethead’s continued departure from the norm, the Buckethead Signature Les Paul looks outwardly much like a slightly modified white Les Paul Standard, but

had been made with an oversized, chambered body. The chambered mahogany back serves to minimize weight, while also adding tonal nuances to the guitar’s overall sound. Its high-gloss Alpine White finish is complimented with a stunning black and white 5 ply binding.

The Buckethead Signature Les Paul body woods present a combination of good clarity, definition and treble bite from the maple, and excellent depth and richness from the mahogany, elements found in the classic Les Paul Standard tone. The chambering adds a further dimension, increasing the complexity of this guitar’s tone, while also increasing its acoustic volume and sustain.

The neck of the Buckethead Signature Les Paul is constructed from a single piece of solid mahogany, and glued to the body at a 4-degree angle (pitch). Mahogany is a traditional neck wood and a long-time partner to many legendary Gibson guitars. It is prized for its combination of lightness and strength.

The Buckethead Signature Les Paul’s headstock is carefully angled at a tried-and-true 17 degrees, which increases pressure on the strings and helps them stay in the nut slots. An increase in string pressure also means there is no loss of string vibration between the nut and the tuners, which equals better sustain.

It is equipped with a Grade-A ebony fingerboard, which enhances note attack and articulation. A hard, dense, dark-black exotic wood, ebony has commonly been regarded as a deluxe, upgraded option on electric guitars, and has been used by Gibson in the past on the Les Paul Custom. Ebony is also extremely hard-wearing, and more resistant to humidity and climate and weather changes than many other fingerboard woods.

The Buckethead Signature Les Paul carries a single Volume control which comprises a 300k linear potentiometer for a smooth, natural roll off.

This unique guitar comes protected in one of Gibson’s durable black, hardshell cases with Gibson logo silk-screened across the front in white lettering.

It is available for 4311$ MSRP.
