Tascam DR-03

This recorder packs 24-bit recording with built-in stereo mics into a package smaller than an energy bar. The DR-03 records to microSD media, and a 2GB card is included to start capturing audio right away.
The DR-03 features playback functions like looping and Variable Speed Audition to slow down music without changing the pitch. It’s designed for low handling noise when recording handheld during concerts or interviews.
The DR-03 is available now from select retailers for a street price less $100.

Based on its acclaimed line of instrument trainers, TASCAM’s GB-10 is the ultimate tool for guitar and bass players to learn and record new music. Load up the SD card with your MP3 collection, then loop and slow down licks without changing the pitch. Plug into the 1/4″ input to play along through amp modeling, reverb and other effects. The GB-10 even records your music with an overdub mode to build up arrangements.
The GB-10 includes a 2GB SD card for loading in your music collection. Variable Speed Audition allows musicians to independently change the speed and pitch of MP3 or WAV playback. The tabletop design is perfect for practicing almost anywhere. A tuner and metronome are also built-in for precision playback, and a footswitch input allows hands-free control.
The TASCAM GB-10 is the ideal practice tool for musicians of any skill level to build their technique.

The next version of iOS – the operating system for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch – will have an unexpected surprise for musicians: real MIDI support.
Apple’s iOS 4.2 update, due in November, includes some interesting new features that didn’t make Steve Job’s official announcement.
According to a report in AppleInsider, beta testers have found that iOS 4.2 adds support for the CoreMIDI framework to the operating system’s application program interfaces.
CoreMIDI could be huge for iOS music apps, because it provides standardized MIDI support. It is a built-in system that supports MIDI devices and how they communicate with other applications.
MIDI support means that the iPad could be a touchscreen control surface for any MIDI device; developers will be able to create multi-touch sequencers that control MIDI hardware; and you should be able to plug your MIDI keyboard into an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and play your iOS software synths.

Authentic Amp Stack Sounds from a Stompbox
Tower of Power
The ST-2 delivers the playing feel and power that are hallmarks of stack amps. It was derived from BOSS’ extensive analysis of the sound and characteristics of a vast number of classic guitar amps. This distortion effect delivers authentic tone and expression that responds naturally to picking nuances and volume changes on your guitar. But emulation is only the beginning, as the ST-2 has the ability to go beyond the sound of real amps.
Crunch, Drive, Ultra High Gain
The ST-2 lets you enjoy a rich, clean tone when playing soft, and smoothly transition into a fat crunch as you play harder — great for rock ballads or songs that require dramatic tone shifts. Imagine the powerful, driving sound of a stack amplifier. An authentic classic-rock tone is here as well, with crisp overtones. Turn up the SOUND knob for a heavy-metal tone. The ST-2 allows extreme high gain, but offers a powerful low-end and sharp edge at the same time.
SOUND Knob
The SOUND knob is a controller that is uniquely BOSS. Simply set it to the tone type you’re looking for. The SOUND knob not only changes gain but sound character as well, from brisk crunch and spectacular drive to earth-shaking ultra high gain.
Road-Tough BOSS
BOSS compact pedals are world-famous for their great sound as well as their road-tough construction, consistency, and reliability. The ST-2 inherits this BOSS-proven design, offering guitarists a solidly constructed pedal that’s built to withstand decades of demanding use.

Codanova VMX Activ8
One of the most bonkers product videos we’ve seen! Although this multitouch, beer-proof control slab seems to be pitched at VJs, it’s apparently MIDI-based, so it should work just fine as a controller for music software.
The 6th edition of the Mapping Festival has come to a close. Including the MetaMapping this was 27 days. In the coming posts I will provide some reflections on some of the works presented at the festival that I believe provide some glimpses at the future of this medium.
Already being distributed virally is the the video above that was premiered at the beginning of the 2nd round of the Mapping Festival VJ tournament, the VMX Activ8, a MIDI based, multi-touch surface controller from Codanova. The layout was designed by the Modul8 Team. It will have LED lights that will provide feedback and as the video illustrates, it is small enough to fit comfortably into your gig bag and sustain beer spill attacks. It is still in pre-production but we just could not wait any longer to wet your appetites for this drule gear.
The following are the credits for the video that was produced nearly within the time of the festival and up until the last minute before it was premiered:

Wacom has announced the second generation of nextbeat, their DJ MIDI controller. Now we can’t say that we’ve seen many of these puppies in the wild, but Wacom is giving the platform at least one more refresh to see if it can garner some additional market share.
nextbeat MK2 is a fully integrated DJ system, incorporating touch sensor controls and live performance functions. Its wireless portable control unit enables performers to move free from the main device, resulting in more engaging live performances, contrasting to the traditional style of DJs performing inside booths.
Nextbeat MK2 Enhancements:
» BPM Sync
» 16GB Storage capacity
» Multi-format: WAV, AIFF, MP3 and AAC-LC
Nextbeat MK2 combines two digital players, a two channel mixer, an effects processor and sampler in a single, lightweight and record-sized unit. Its 3.5-inch LCD panel displays information such as the track information, waveform, cue points and loop points providing all the functionality a DJ needs for playing music. In addition, nextbeat MK2 does not require a PC like many other DJ systems allowing DJs to quickly setup their gear and to reduce the necessary equipment.

They don’t explain the details – but it looks like they are using a custom MPC-style MIDI controller to trigger Kong in Reason 5, and projecting their computer screen as video onto the biggest skyscraper in Stockholm
