Infinite C is a suite of four-second songs composed in C major and played back in random order.

This browser-based sequencer accepts Play and Pause commands at four second intervals, indicated by an occasional music note icon. Open multiple copies on one machine or open copies on multiple machines at once. Tested in current versions of FireFox and Safari.

Inspired by Andrew Shurtz and Sebastian Campos of We Have Photoshop. It is also an accidental homage to Terry Riley’s 1964 piece In C.

Abbey Road studio A

Live orchestral music is breathtaking, especially when you’re hearing it in Studio One at Abbey Road Studios. With fabric baffles hanging in rows on the high ceiling and subtly angled sections of wall all around, the acoustics of this auspicious hall render every note as sharp as you’ve ever heard. It makes you realise how infrequently we hear music that isn’t amplified. This is music in its natural form: pure and vibrant.

And yet we’re hearing only half an orchestra. Today, woodwind and brass have convened for the second, and final, day of recording for Killzone 2’s 28 minutes of cutscene music. Later this evening, the choir will arrive to perform its parts before the session ends at 10pm.

Though 28 minutes doesn’t sound like much, it’s a punishing schedule for two days of sessions, and when we arrive in the late afternoon, they’re already running behind. The music’s composer, Joris de Man, who also wrote the scores for the original Killzone and PSP follow-up Killzone: Liberation as a founding member of Guerrilla Games, has had to hurriedly tweak the orchestration for sections that didn’t quite go to plan during yesterday’s session, in which they recorded the strings. And the conductor, Jon Williams, is finding the session particularly gruelling because he broke his collarbone only a couple of weeks previously.

But experienced from a balcony above the control room, it sounds incredible. Even without the strings and choir in place, the music is full, angry and dramatic, with sharp trumpets punctuating phrases of the final piece of the day, The Helghast March.

On the other end of the scale are the loud, low, vicious barks of a cimbasso, but there’s room in the score for almost every instrument to take a role, from mournful oboe to processions of dramatic horns. Williams completes another take and quietly waits for de Man and the engineers in the control room to confirm over his headphones that all was well. The players relax.

Conservatively dressed and generally middle-aged, they’re all session musicians, and many play principally for the London Symphony Orchestra. You can’t help but wonder what they think about playing music for a videogame. Eventually, with two minutes to go until the wind section’s session time is up, the control room confirms it’s a wrap.

For Langjökull, Snæfellsjökull, Solheimajökull, artist Katie Paterson recorded the sound of three glaciers in Iceland. She then pressed these sounds on three records made of the melt water of these three glaciers. Three turn tables played the records for nearly two hours until they completely melted. A sample of one of the records can be heard here.

It seems like the ultimate piece of conceptual art. Next to that it points at present environmental problems like global warming an the perishability of our planet in a beautiful, subtle way.

The opening of the 58th annual BMI Student Composer Awards competition has been announced by BMI President and CEO Del Bryant and BMI Foundation President Ralph N. Jackson. The competition, which is co-sponsored by BMI and the BMI Foundation, will award $20,000 in prizes. Student composers under the age of 28 who are citizens of the Western Hemisphere (North, South and Central America, the Caribbean Island Nations and the Hawaiian Islands) may apply. All entries must be postmarked no later than February 5, 2010.

The Student Composer Awards were established in 1951 to encourage young composers in the creation of serious music, and, through cash prizes, to aid in continuing their musical education. Celebrated composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich serves as the Awards Chair; Milton Babbitt is the Chair Emeritus. Composer luminaries such as William Bolcom, George Crumb, Mario Davidovsky, Philip Glass, John Harbison, Aaron Jay Kernis, Donald Martino, Steven Mackey, Christopher Rouse, Joseph Schwantner, Michael Torke and Charles Wuorinen received their earliest recognition through this program.

There are no limitations as to instrumentation, style or length of work submitted. The prizes, which range from $500 to $5,000, are awarded at the discretion of the final judging panel and compositions are judged completely under pseudonyms. Official rules and entry forms are available at www.bmifoundation.org.
