UA’s First-Ever Firewire 800/400 DSP Accelerators Provide Plug-and-Play Access to Award-Winning UAD Powered Plug-Ins on Wide Range of Mac Computers

NAMM SHOW NEWS – ANAHEIM, Calif. January 13, 2011 — Universal Audio (UA), a leading manufacturer of professional audio recording products, today announced the impending release of UAD-2 Satellite DUO and QUAD Firewire DSP Accelerator Packages. As the newest members of UA’s award-winning UAD-2 Powered Plug-Ins platform, the UAD-2 Satellite family combines DSP acceleration with the plug-and-play simplicity of Firewire 800/400 — perfect for modern, Intel-based iMacs and MacBook Pros.
The UAD-2 Satellite puts the entire UAD Powered Plug-Ins library within easy reach of Firewire 800 and 400-equipped computers; no PCIe card installation required. In developing these UAD plug-ins, UA’s DSP engineers work with leading hardware manufacturers — including Roland, Neve, Studer, dbx, Solid State Logic, Lexicon, Manley, Empirical Labs, Trident, SPL, EMT and more — using their exact schematics, golden units, and experienced ears. This gives computer-based musicians and engineers the warmth and harmonics of classic analog recordings, wherever they mix.
“This is a really exciting announcement, both for UA as a company, and for legions of musicians and engineers wanting to tap into UAD-2 plug-ins via Firewire,” commented Universal Audio President Matt Ward. “The UAD-2 Satellite is a sleek, high-quality product that delivers even higher quality results.”
“UAD-2 Satellite is the result of UA listening to our customers, and giving them a processing solution that is both elegant and powerful,” added UA Senior Product Manager Lev Perrey. “Coupled with our roadmap of exciting new plug-ins, we anticipate this product expanding our 40,000-strong UAD user base significantly in the years to come.”
Notable UAD-2 Satellite features include:
- Access the UAD Powered Plug-Ins library on select Firewire 800 and 400 equipped computers
- Compatible with a wide range of modern Intel-based iMacs and MacBook Pros
- Run larger mixes in Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, Nuendo, Performer and more — without taxing host computer CPU
- 5 models to choose from: DUO (Core); DUO Flexi (w/ $500 Plug-In Voucher); QUAD (Core), QUAD Flexi (w/ $500 Plug-In Voucher), and QUAD Omni v.5.7 (w/ 50 UAD plug-ins)

Add some HEAT to your mix. Get the warmth and sonic character of analog “in the box” with HEAT (Harmonically Enhanced Algorithm Technology), an easy-to-use Pro Tools|HD software add-on that gives you the euphonic characteristics of prized analog gear without the expense or added bulk. Whether you’re mixing music or sound for picture, you’ll get the unmistakable sonic characteristics of a vintage analog console or outboard gear to “gel” your mixes together—right in Pro Tools.
Developed in collaboration with renowned audio designer and Cranesong founder, Dave Hill, HEAT tightly integrates with your Pro Tools|HD system, enabling you to easily create rich-sounding mixes like never before—with unique warmth, punch, and clarity.
Easily add analog warmth and character to any Pro Tools|HD mix
No need to launch a plug-in—access HEAT right in your Pro Tools Mix window
Control HEAT across every channel of your mix, without having to manage multiple instances
Realistically re-create the sound of audio mixed through vintage analog gear
Designed in collaboration with Cranesong founder, Dave Hill
Old School Sound, Modern Technology
HEAT does more than just warm-up your sound—it actually fuses the color characteristics of vintage analog consoles, vacuum tube circuits, and analog tape into your mix using high-quality, sophisticated algorithms. In the analog world, euphonic characteristics are introduced across individual audio tracks when mixing on an analog console or tracking to analog tape. HEAT works similarly, processing all audio tracks individually. But it also gives you the power to tweak its Drive and Tone controls globally to get the sound you want, whether that means something richer, brighter, smoother, or livelier. You can also A/B individual tracks or the entire mix to compare your handiwork, choose a pre or post insert state, or bypass HEAT altogether.
Set It and Forget It
HEAT uses the Pro Tools|HD TDM architecture to work its magic, but it’s no plug-in, making it fast and easy to access and use. That’s because HEAT appears right in the Pro Tools Mix window—no need to insert it on every individual track or select it from a menu. Use it on your entire mix, with global Drive and Tone control, for total effortlessness—just “set it and forget it!”—or bypass it on a track-by-track basis to only affect certain sounds.
The Magic of Outboard “In the Box”
Whether you’re mixing music albums or music beds, you can finally step away from costly analog gear and get the sound you’re after “in the box” with HEAT. Easily create great-sounding mixes that have the familiar sonic characteristics of being mixed through a vintage console or box—including the pleasant harmonic distortion that “glues” your mixes together—without having to endure the usual technical complexities—or expense.
Wake Up Your Post-Production Sound
If you’re a sound designer or sound effects editor, adding a little HEAT to your tracks can make any sterile-sounding recording or canned effect sound punchier and livelier. Experiment and you can even change-up the character of audio assets into something better or more unique.

HLS Channel
Developed in association with producer/engineer Eddie Kramer, the HLS Channel was meticulously modeled on a Helios mixing console just like the one he used in historic sessions at London’s Olympic Studios (In fact, Waves actually managed to get their hands on the Helios from the Rolling Stones mobile truck, which was used on a slew of classic recordings during the early ’70s). In addition to modeling the Helios EQs with their sweet saturation, high-end presence, and fat low-frequency boost, Waves even modeled the unique behavior, coloration, and drive of the console’s preamps. To top it all off, the HLS Channel features a precision-modeled VU meter that recreates the sensitivity, ballistic behavior, look and feel of the original.
Features:
- Modeled Mic & Line preamp drive.
- Analog noise & hum for added realism.
- EQ bypass mode.
- Up to 24-bit 96kHz resolution.
- Mono and Stereo components.
PIE Compressor
Developed in association with producer/engineer Eddie Kramer, the PIE Compressor was precision-modeled on a vintage Pye compressor like the ones he used in historic sessions at London’s Olympic Studios. A mainstay in esteemed British studios throughout the classic rock era, the original Pye processors are considered by many to be among of the best buss compressors of all time. The Waves PIE plug-in features a meticulously modeled VU meter with super-fast refresh rates that recreates the accuracy, sensitivity, and ballistic behavior of a physical analog meter.
Features:
- Analog noise & hum for added realism.
- Compression and limiting modes.
- Auto-makeup gain.
- Up to 24-bit 192kHz resolution.
- Mono and Stereo components.
